Sourcing China project management
Managing your project
Choosing to manufacture your product in China could be a good option for your business. China offers lower costs of goods, cheaper labor, and large facilities accustomed to working with foreign businesses. Once you have decided to outsource your goods, there are many steps you will need to take. You will need to find the best manufacturing partner, negotiate the costs, and discuss your specific requirements. After these steps are finished, you will need to perform quality control checks and continue to communicate with the manufacturer. It may seem like the finish line once these items are established. It definitely is not.
The goal of selling products as a small business is to continue to sell and even expand. Once the first production run is complete, you’ll need to quickly prepare for the next one. With any luck, a high-quality product, and some business savvy, the next run will need to happen quickly.
Avoid Common Mistakes
- After the first run is complete, don’t leave subsequent runs in the hands of only your internal team. Some businesses may think that once they have received the first product shipment, they are in the clear with the China manufacturer. The facility knows the requirements and is fully capable of simply fulfilling a reorder. This may not always be the case. It is still important to perform quality control checks for all orders. Keep the lines of communication open with the China manufacturer so they know your expectations. Let them know you will always want to receive samples, even if this is run number twenty-five of the same product. You never know if workers or manufacturing facility owners have changed and if the new team is fully up to date.
- Communicate changes to your order. You may find that after the first few runs of your product, there are some improvements needed. These improvements could be as small as color changes to large improvements like shape. You are the business owner. You can’t rely on the China manufacturer to catch all mistakes or make improvements. You may assume that they will suggest changes but keep in mind, that they are not a part of your business. The job of the manufacturer is production only. This means that you need to give clear updated specifications if needed. Communicate your new product needs and communicate the need for information.
- No need to handle all your China manufacturing needs internally. Working with a sourcing agent can help you avoid mistakes along the way. China sourcing agents can help bridge communication gaps and work through any product challenges you may face.
